Dressing For A Day at the Races

Day at the races image

Next weekend we’re off out for the day, sans small people, for the Northumberland Plate event at Newcastle Racecourse. (For the uninitiated, this is an actual horse racing event and nothing to do with crockery. I checked). Apart from getting some time to socialise with some other parent friends without any little distractions running around, it’s also a rare opportunity to get dressed up for the day which hasn’t happened for what feels like two years so I intend to make the most of it!

If you’ve ever been to the races anywhere, you’ll know that the dress code can vary. We have Grandstand tickets but not in the ultra-swanky area, so no need for suits and hats, but a little effort is still required. I’m planning on wearing a favourite special occasion dress that I wore for a friend’s wedding, actually two years ago, but I’ve had a baby since then so it will be nice to get back into it.

I couldn’t resist a bit of browsing though, so if you’re off to a day at the races over the next couple of months, or even a summer wedding or garden party (because we all get invited to those, right?), here are some of the gorgeous garments and accessories that caught my eye.

Choose Your Dress

I always find a skater dress to be a really flattering style and I love this floral pattern. You have a choice of colours for your accessories with this one too. Pick out that hot pink detail for a fascinator or feature bracelet and you’re good to go!

Oasis dress captionedMonsoon occasion dresses are always stunning, and this one is perfect for summer with its candy stripe colours and metallic finish. The midi-length skirt is perhaps a bit more respectable for the VIP area than an above-the-knee design.

This delicate little ivory lace number is definitely one to be worn when sticky fingers aren’t around! Perfect if you want a less floaty skirt, it looks like it fits beautifully, and also comes in Navy if you don’t suit light colours or you are worried about keeping it clean!

Choose your shoes

I’m a bit in love with these rose gold wedges from Next. I think I’ll be splashing out on a pair for our upcoming summer holiday to Mallorca as they’ll be perfect for evenings. Wedges are always a good alternative to heels if you will be on your feet all day, or if you’ll have to walk on grass at any point!

These lovely things are much more than I would normally pay for a pair of sandals but these look so wearable, I might be able to justify it. Again, the mid height block heel makes them much more comfortable for long-term wear and you might even manage to stay on your feet after a couple of glasses of Prosecco (we don’t get out much…). The neutral shade means they will go with almost any summer outfit and I love the cute ankle strap.

Choose your bag

A hardcase clutch bag is the perfect accessory to keep all your bits and pieces safe for the day, with enough room to fit in your purse, make-up and other essentials without looking bulky. Get one with a detachable strap so that you can have your hands free for holding your drink and waving at horses. This simple but attractive bag from Accessorize comes in six different colours so you can have one for every outfit!

Accessorize bag captionedHow gorgeous is this one? Answer: very. A busy design like this probably works best with a single colour dress and would go beautifully with the ivory lace number.
